A child who can read is a child who can do anything. Still, only 37 percent of Houston Independent School District third-graders achieved Texas reading standards in 2013. At Patterson + Sheridan, we recognize the pressing need to raise this statistic. We are proud to support CYCLE Houston, a children’s charity dedicated to improving literacy rates in Greater Houston Title One schools, grades K - 3.
Improving literacy one bicycle at a time
CYCLE Houston encourages children to be both physically and mentally active, empowering them to become better readers and opening the door to a future full of possibilities. The program teaches young students the value of hard work by allowing them to set their own literacy goals and rewarding them with a bicycle once the goal is met.
Patterson + Sheridan first partnered with CYCLE Houston in 2014 after Jennifer Lington, our IT Manager, told us how much she enjoyed contributing to such a worthy cause in the Houston area. In 2015, our employees helped build 53 bikes for CYCLE kids and handed out 237 bikes for one school. We look forward to continuing the effort to improve literacy and help Houston’s young students ride their way to success.
