Arien Ferrell, Of Counsel

Former in-house patent lawyer with decades of software and complex tech experience

For more than 20 years, Arien Ferrell has helped businesses big and small navigate legal challenges and protect their intellectual property. From complex software and financial technologies to artificial intelligence and big data infrastructure, he has secured patents across various industries and developed entire patent programs from the ground up, both at startups and large companies.

Before joining the firm, Arien served as senior patent counsel at a $5-billion business and financial software company for more than a decade. He helped grow the company’s portfolio from ten patents to more than a hundred within a year. Today it’s approaching a thousand. As a head product attorney, he also drove and executed the launch of a new software product in the highly regulated industry of business lending.

Fresh perspective from an inventor, IP attorney and business strategist — all in one

Thanks to his decades of experience working as an in-house attorney, Arien appreciates the challenges of running a business and meeting budgets. He understands that behind every legal decision is a business decision, and he thinks strategically when providing legal counsel. According to Arien, attorneys are members of the orchestra — business leaders are the conductors as they develop and apply company strategy.

Arien is never satisfied with “knowing enough” either. He continually studies changes in the law to stay on the leading edge of new developments. He also never settles for a process because “it’s how we’ve always done it.” Arien is always looking for ways to reinvent and improve something to keep it from going stale. Clients appreciate this fresh perspective and his ability to unclog institutional traffic jams and create efficiencies.

As a named inventor on two issued patents, Arien understands what inventors go through and can relate to their challenge of balancing the application process with the priority of getting product out the door. He is also a military veteran, having served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps. Arien is a father of two and new to Texas. When he’s not exploring Houston, he enjoys video games, as well as crafting in wood and metal.
