Ashley Maskus, Associate

Balancing granular analysis with big-picture thinking

Ashley is an engineer turned patent attorney who doesn’t back down from a challenge. She started at the firm as a summer associate and part-time intern where she drafted and prosecuted patent applications, and assisted with pre-litigation strategies. Ashley’s practice builds on her experience working with biotechnology, semiconductor and wireless communications clients.

Before joining Patterson + Sheridan, Ashley worked for American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). As an engineer, she performed stability-related reviews on behalf of the U.S. Coast Guard to assess aspects of design such as strength and stability, including risk analysis of ships and marine structures. Ashley was then promoted to a business analyst position, where she worked alongside senior leadership in developing company strategy. This experience gave her an inside perspective on business operations, trendspotting and the value of performance metrics.

Clients appreciate Ashley’s unique blend of business acumen, engineering knowledge and legal skills, which allow her to understand how intellectual property strategy intersects with business goals and decisions at a high level.

A lifelong learner and go-getter

Ashley is driven: If there isn’t work to be done in front of her, she’ll go find some. Her craving to learn something new every day is what motivated her to pursue a career in IP law, and that passion continues to fuel her work today.

As a student at the South Texas College of Law Houston, Ashley graduated in the top 15% of her class and earned the highest grade in several courses, including Patent Law, Copyright Law and Civil Pre-Trial Advocacy. She studied ocean engineering at Texas A&M University, where she was a member of the college of engineering’s honor society. Outside the office, you can usually find Ashley in a local spin class, hanging out with family and friends, or cheering on her Aggies, Texans and Astros.
