  • Marketing & Business Development Manager
    Houston, TX

    Patterson + Sheridan LLP is seeking a Marketing & Business Development Manager to execute the firm’s business development, public relations and client services. The objective is to expand and support the firm’s client base.

    The Marketing & BD Manager will be responsible for implementing and managing the firm’s strategic marketing plan as well as identifying opportunities for improvement. Tasks include assisting attorneys with respect to the evaluation and improvement of client relations and services as well as future business development; maintaining attorney biographies and practice descriptions; performing market research and analysis; preparing and managing public relations activities and communications for the firm; managing the website; furnishing marketing advice, counseling and providing general staff support to all departments within the organization; maintaining firm databases utilized for marketing, business development and client services; keeping track of current industry trends; and managing events, sponsorships and functions that highlight Firm services.

    The primary managerial responsibilities will include maintaining the department budget; ensuring project tasks are in line with the strategic plan and business objectives; identifying and providing standards for gathering information for use in trend analysis; and evaluating reports, decisions and results of the department in relation to established goals to present to the Firm Managing Partner, Department Managing Partners and Management Committee.

    The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing and business development as well as understand Intellectual Property law and/or technical backgrounds that support the needs and expectations of law firm clients. Additionally, the Marketing & BD Manager must have strong leadership skills, marketing management and strategic planning experience, and be highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects.

    Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for developing, planning and leading firm-wide Marketing and Business Development Initiatives.
    • Works with the Firm Managing Partner, Department Managing Partners and Management Committee in creating a strategic marketing plan.
    • Assists attorneys with RFPs and pitch meetings to clients and/or prospects.
    • Develops and maintains practice specific marketing materials that articulate Firm capabilities and experiences.
    • Oversees and executes the Firm’s rankings, recognitions and awards submissions.
    • Performs market research and analysis to support the Firm, practices and individual attorneys.
    • Furnishes market advice, counsel and general staff support to all departments within the organization.
    • Monitors external and internal environment for development of new market segments.
    • Develops public relations communications including ads to market firm services.
    • Manages events and sponsorships that highlight Firm services.
    • Coordinates and manages the ordering and distribution of Holiday Cards and Gifts to clients in conjunction with the Recruiting Manager.
    • Develops and maintains the Marketing/BD budget.
    • Manages the Firm’s website and SEO.
    • Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings, as needed.
    • Serves as the main point of contact on all Marketing and BD matters.
    • Remains on the forefront of emerging industry practices.

    Education/Experience/Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or any related field or any similar combination of education and experience required.
    • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in Marketing, Business Development, Recruiting or related field required.
    • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in the legal industry.
    • Background knowledge of Intellectual Property law and/or technical backgrounds strongly preferred.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; WordPress; and other computer/office functions.

  • Intellectual Property Associate, Patent Agent or Technical Advisor
    Dallas, TX Houston, TX Greensboro, NC San Diego, CA Shrewsbury, NJ Waco, TX San Jose, CA

    Patterson + Sheridan, LLP is seeking IP professionals with a Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or Chemistry background and 1 - 5 years of patent law experience, including patent preparation and prosecution, and ideally experience drafting invalidity, and non-infringement opinions.

    • Associate, Patent Agent or Technical Advisor with 2-4 years of experience with a technical degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering, ideally with artificial intelligence/machine learning experience
    • Associate, Patent Agent or Technical Advisor with 2-5 years of experience with a technical degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in circuit design, analog circuits, radio frequency, transistor-level circuits and/or telecommunications.
    • Associate or Patent Agent with 1-4 years of experience with a technical degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, ideally with artificial intelligence/machine learning experience
    • Associate or Patent Agent with 2-5 years of experience with a technical degree in Life Science or Chemistry

  • Intellectual Property Litigation Associate
    Houston, TX

    Patterson + Sheridan, LLP is seeking a Litigation Associate to join our growing IP Litigation practice. The ideal candidate will have excellent academic and professional credentials, as well as a minimum of 2-5 years of experience handling all aspects of patent litigation. A degree or background in engineering or the sciences and actual patent litigation trial experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with 5+ years of general litigation experience in a large law firm setting that demonstrate the ability to learn underlying technology will also be considered. Candidates must have a JD, strong research, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Patent Coordinator
    Houston, TX

    The Patent Coordinator (PC) is responsible for preparing all documents in support of U.S. patent preparation and prosecution activities under the review and advisement of an attorney or partner. The PC will be training on the firm’s systems software and IP-procedures and practices in order to have a thorough understanding of the interrelationship. The PC is responsible for supporting legal staff dockets and can interface with attorneys and partners on all administrative matters.

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepares and files U.S. patent applications and related prosecution documents with attorney review and guidance
    • Prepares and proofs formal documents (Assignment, Declaration) for attorney review, including obtaining inventor information and details as needed
    • Drafts Information Disclosure Statements (IDS) for attorney review.  Uses references from attorneys, foreign associates and consults with partners, associates, patent agents and technical advisors who are stakeholders in a matter
    • Supports docket for assigned legal staff to ensure that every docket action is addressed within the specified timeframe
    • Dockets completed actions after responding or filing
    • Completes New Business Intake (NBI) for new matters for existing clients
    • Assists Associates, Patent Agents and Technical Advisors in the efficient use of administrative processes and systems
    • Manages personal docket (under attorney review), enters billable time in Elite as directed by Managing Partner and achieves billable hours targets if applicable
    • Performs patent, bibliography and family searches
    • Performs other related duties as assigned

    Education/Experience/Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or Certification in Paralegal Studies preferred.
    • 1 to 3 years of increasing administrative responsibilities, preferably in Intellectual Property law and practice.
    • Ability to use a desktop/laptop computer, phone, copier and other general office equipment as needed.
    • Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and high level of attention to detail required.

  • Trademark Paralegal
    Houston, TX

    The Trademark Paralegal works as a member of a highly collaborative legal support team.

    Responsibilities:

    • Handle all stages of USPTO trademark prosecution filings, including cancellations, oppositions, and other appeal filings at the TTAB
    • Handle title updates for trademark registrations at the USPTO
    • Effectively maintain trademark dockets for a growing team of trademark attorneys, including prioritizing deadlines based on filing requirements
    • Correspond independently with clients and foreign counsel on filing priorities
    • Create client reports summarizing portfolio statuses and filing priorities
    • Research marketplace use conditions for clients and third party conflicts

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Demonstrated work experience as a trademark paralegal in a law firm
    • Bachelor's degree and/or ABA-approved paralegal certification desired
    • Experience with Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word and intermediate knowledge with editing and manipulating datasets in Excel
    • Experience with IPManager docketing software is a plus
    • General knowledge of the domestic trademark and brand protection landscape and a curiosity to learn about international protection practices
    • Knowledge of consumer and technology brands, brand protection practices for Fortune 500 companies, and marketing trends
    • Excellent flexibility, organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Strong communication and client service skills
    • High level of dependability, reliability and professionalism
