A former software developer for the energy industry, Johnny Lam applies his technical background to helping some of the world's best-known tech companies build and protect their intellectual property portfolios. Since joining the firm in 2008, Johnny has specialized in patent preparation and prosecution for a range of software, Internet, and communications-related technologies.

Johnny's results-driven approach to patent preparation and prosecution seeks to broaden the range of strategic options available to his clients early in prosecution. His philosophy aims to improve negotiating leverage with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to better secure patents for his clients based on their individual needs and budget.
Proven Track Record in Appeals
Johnny has a track record of success in appeal proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Knowing the importance of collaborating with patent examiners even in the appeals process, he considers a range of strategies to obtain patent protection for his clients.
Johnny received his undergraduate degree from Berkeley, where he was a member of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon honor society for the computing sciences. While working full-time as a software developer, he undertook postgraduate coursework in computer science at Stanford University. He then received his law degree from Washington University, where he was a Doug and Cindy Kelly Scholar in Law and Executive Articles Editor of the Washington University Journal of Law and Policy. He also served as judicial extern to the Honorable Mary Ann L. Medler of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Outside of work, Johnny enjoys singing and short-distance running. He is fluent in Cantonese and Chinese and conversant in Mandarin and Taiwanese.
Johnny is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
