Lucas Kinard, Ph.D., Patent Agent

Dedicated, multifaceted patent agent with a strong technical background

Lucas is driven by technology. Passionate about new ideas and the patent process, he focuses on electronics and semiconductor technologies and assists clients in the chemical and oil and gas industries. At Patterson + Sheridan, Lucas combines his love of technology and IP law to be an effective, cutting-edge patent agent. He anticipates clients’ obstacles and needs, while deeply understanding the ideas that propel them, allowing Lucas to shine in patent preparation and prosecution.

Before joining the firm, Lucas spent five years at Weatherford International as the oil and gas company’s in-house patent manager and engineer. At Weatherford, he handled 250 invention disclosures, 150 new patent applications and managed patent preparation and prosecution across 10 different product lines. Lucas worked directly with inventors and helped them navigate the granular processes of patent preparation. Thanks to this in-house experience, he can identify with the challenges his clients face and understands how to overcome them.

In-house knowledge paired with academic research experience

Lucas earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rice University. He studied materials development for biotechnology applications, which informs his work with medical device clients. While attending graduate school, Lucas devoted himself to a 10-month internship at the university’s technology transfer office, where he sharpened his understanding of patent research in an academic setting. His experience at Rice provides Lucas unique insights in how to most effectively service his university clients today.

In 2009, Lucas received a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. He worked on projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Lucas is a father of two young children and, in his free time, volunteers with Trail Life USA.
