As an associate attorney, Daniel McGovern assists clients with a range of complex IP needs. Whether that means offering strategic counsel or preparing patent applications, Daniel leverages his engineering expertise and people skills to help inventors protect their intellectual property in the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemical, industrial products, and oil and gas.

Engineer-turned-IP lawyer who is always ready for a new challenge

As a student at the University of Illinois College of Law, Daniel participated in patent and trademark clinics that assisted entrepreneurial students with their intellectual property needs. He worked as both a commercialization analyst and patent fellow for the university’s Office of Technology Management, evaluating inventions from professors and graduate students for patentability. In his final year, he clerked for a Chicago-based IP law firm, drafting demand letters asserting patent infringement, analyzing patent claims, drafting claim charts for infringement analysis, and researching patent claim interpretation in preparation for Markman hearings.

Since graduating law school in 2020, Daniel has gained experience in several technical areas and a multitude of different technologies. Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, he worked as a patent prosecution attorney in the mechanical engineering department at Stinson LLP.

Daniel first began his professional career as a process engineer for G&W Electric Company where he conducted work with solid dielectric switchgear, thermoset injection molding and materials testing. He earned a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Finding purpose and excitement in protecting evolving technologies

Daniel prides himself on being an adaptable, organized and detail-oriented patent attorney. Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of the inventors around him, Daniel genuinely enjoys helping clients protect the ideas they’ve developed and technologies they’ve created. He strongly believes in placing his client’s needs first and is always willing to put in the necessary work to gain his clients an edge.

When he isn’t championing his client’s inventions, Daniel can usually be found watching or playing sports. His Chicago roots shine through on game days, whether it’s the Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks, or Fighting Illini on the screen. He also enjoys golfing and laughing along with his favorite TV sitcoms.
