Scott Martin is an experienced attorney whose practice mainly centers on mechanical, electrical, and software matters. Whether preparing and prosecuting a patent application or facilitating an acquisition, Scott protects his clients’ intellectual property across many fields. In particular, Scott has significant experience in the transportation sector, especially in the aerospace and automotive industries, but he also handles matters involving artificial intelligence, clean technologies, communications technologies, and complex software.

Scott brings ten years of IP law experience to Patterson + Sheridan, having advised clients ranging from startups to Fortune 100 companies. He has a proven track record of helping innovators build valuable IP portfolios. For instance, Scott was one of the key architects that developed a global patent portfolio directed to a fuel-agnostic generator used for powering heavy-duty trucks and electric vehicle batteries. The patent portfolio now has more than 20 U.S. allowances and was sold to an electrified powertrain systems company for over $37 million.

Leveraging his engineering background, Scott utilizes his industry knowledge and passion for innovation to create solid, business-valuable patents that strategically align with a client’s business objectives. Before starting his career in IP law, Scott worked as an engineer for a flight simulator company, where he prepared proposals on flight simulators for military aircraft, such as C-130s and MH-60Rs.

Scott particularly enjoys the client counseling aspect of his job and views the relationship between himself and his client as a partnership. He is especially passionate about developing IP strategies to protect patentable subject matter associated with product launches. Scott is committed to maintaining strong communication with his clients throughout the patent application process and beyond. At every step, he ensures that the legal strategy will result in a valuable asset for a client’s business.  Providing outstanding service and high-quality work product are the hallmarks of Scott’s IP practice.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Wayne State University and his J.D. from Stetson University College of Law. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Scott interned for a tier 1 automotive supplier, providing engineering support to the company’s product design team. In law school, Scott was a member of the Stetson Law Review.

When not in the office, Scott spends most of his time with his wife, pets and three daughters, who he often chauffeurs to their countless extracurricular activities. He enjoys playing and watching all sports, especially tennis, football, baseball and surfing.
