An IP law practice molded by a passion for computer science and physics

Jonathan Howell is a scrupulous patent attorney with a deep understanding of artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtualization, networking and cloud computing, software development, and crypto and blockchain technologies.

As an associate in Patterson + Sheridan’s San Diego office, he steers clients through patent preparation and prosecution in the areas of AI, machine learning, complex software, IT, financial technology, business methods, industrial products, and medical devices and procedures.

Jonathan carries forward a legacy of legal practice in his family. He found his niche in computer science and physics, two fields of study that keep him fully engaged and fulfill his passion for learning.

Helping clients protect their inventions in the U.S. and abroad

Jonathan’s desire to help develop and protect innovative technologies prompted him to pursue a law degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law. After graduation, he gained valuable experience at Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP, where he composed hundreds of applications and responses to United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) actions on behalf of clients. While there, Jonathan also managed foreign counsel for prosecution of non-U.S. patent applications.

His broad IP legal experience includes protecting innovations in materials sciences, collaborative music creation tools, nuclear plant safety and diagnostic equipment, personal safety devices, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

 A focus on community service

Giving back to his community is an imperative part of Jonathan’s duty as a lawyer and he actively seeks out pro bono opportunities. In pursuit of this, Jonathan volunteers for Georgia PATENTS, an initiative of the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts that connects under-resourced inventors with pro bono legal representation.

When he is not working or chasing around his two young sons, Jonathan appreciates traveling, board and card games, and playing the bass guitar. As a former collegiate athlete, he values physical fitness and enjoys running, yoga, and playing tennis and squash.
