Josh Monaghan, Counsel

Houston, TX

O: (713) 623-4844 D: (713) 577-4832

Dedicated IP attorney with engineering and patent portfolio management experience

Josh Monaghan helps clients obtain and evaluate intellectual property in a variety of industries, from oil field service tools to semiconductor technologies. Not only has he successfully prepared, prosecuted and analyzed patents in the oil and gas industry, he also has firsthand engineering experience in the midstream processing field. Knowing these tools on paper is one thing, but Josh understands the challenges, solutions and nuances to how they operate in the field.

Inventors appreciate Josh’s industry experience and mechanical engineering background, because he’s not just a patent lawyer — he’s a fellow engineer who speaks their language. His past patent experience, which includes analyzing legal issues relating to validity, infringement and claim construction, enables Josh to take a big-picture approach to his patent preparation and prosecution work. He understands the potential challenges an invention may face, and he drafts patent applications to be as comprehensive and strong as possible in the long term.

A client-focused researcher who leaves no stone unturned

Josh strives to make the patent process efficient and convenient for his clients. When it comes to providing strategic counsel, he conducts all the research necessary (and then some) so that he can present the pros and cons of each option in a way that’s digestible and easy to understand. The goal: allowing his clients to make an informed decision and get back to their own day-to-day operations worry-free.

In addition to his regular practice, Josh has volunteered to help military veterans with legal issues through the Veterans Legal Clinic at Houston’s VA Medical Center. He and his wife also foster dogs as they are trained to be therapy pets for veterans suffering from PTSD. In his free time, Josh enjoys hunting, hiking and spending time outdoors.
