Kristian Sullivan, Of Counsel
Houston, TX
O: (713) 623-4844 D: (713) 576-5064 [email protected]A seasoned attorney with a love for learning
Kristian Sullivan is a knowledgeable attorney who brings more than ten years of IP law experience to Patterson + Sheridan. He protects his clients’ valuable innovations by preparing, prosecuting and litigating patents in the fields of chemicals, clean technology, complex software, medical devices and procedures, oil and gas services, transportation, construction and mechanical systems.
Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Kristian prepared and prosecuted United States patent applications, conducted freedom-to-operate analyses and directed foreign patent application prosecution for an Am Law 100 firm. He also previously worked in various roles – from summer clerk to principal – at a Houston IP firm.
In addition to his time in private practice, Kristian also leverages his experience as a former in-house counsel at ExxonMobil, where he prepared and prosecuted U.S. patent applications, directed foreign patent prosecution and drafted, negotiated and analyzed IP agreements. Before law school, Kristian completed several internships with Shell Oil Company involving engineering work on fixed and rotating equipment and reliability related to downstream oil refining and chemical processing. Both of these roles provide Kristian with a technical understanding of the oil and gas industry, as well as knowledge of how he can best work with in-house counsel and inventors.
Putting clients first, no matter the outcome
A skilled writer and communicator, Kristian excels at explaining complex arguments and translating them into effective patent applications. He particularly enjoys learning about new inventions (no matter the topic) and loves to discuss the work that inventors are most proud of.
Kristian understands the importance of client service and values providing his clients with practical advice. While he is not afraid of taking a matter to trial, he recognizes when it is necessary to wisely choose to argue a matter or let it lie.
When not in the office, Kristian enjoys spending time with his family and adventuring outdoors.
He earned his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston.
