Tomas Vasquez, Technical Advisor

Houston, TX

O: (713) 576-5063

A research-driven chemist with 10+ years of IP experience

As a technical advisor in Patterson + Sheridan’s Houston office, Tomas Vasquez works side-by-side with attorneys to protect clients’ intellectual property assets. He prepares and prosecutes patents in the specialized fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemical, clean technology, optics and medical devices and procedures.

With more than a decade of experience as a technical advisor, Tomas has a thorough understanding of what it takes to earn approval from USPTO patent examiners, successfully achieving and exceeding client goals and expectations time and time again. A chemist at heart, Tomas earned his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in chemistry from Texas A&M Kingsville.

Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Tomas worked as an oilfield polymer chemist and environmental chemist, gaining familiarity with carbon dioxide sequestration and renewable fuels. He leverages his in-field knowledge while assisting clients to patent their chemical and clean technology inventions. While pursuing his Ph.D. and master’s degrees, Tomas worked heavily in synthetic organic chemistry labs, sharpening his research and analytical skills while researching kappa opioid agonists and synthetic viral inhibitors.

Client-focused work ethic

Tomas’s philosophy is straightforward: keep it simple and focus on the science. He writes concise, fact-based and easy-to-understand patent applications, office action responses and invalidity and non-infringement opinions. In a way, he views patent practice similar to solving puzzles. He’s combing through the details for the perfect piece that will tie together the big picture and ensure his clients’ objectives are reached.

The opportunity to work with pioneering technologies motivates Tomas. He devotes the necessary time to research and holistically understand his client’s inventions. With the knowledge foundation in place, he takes his work a step further and looks at how certain patents and language will impact the client’s future business ventures.

In his spare time, Tomas enjoys spending time with his two daughters and watching movies.  He is also fluent in Spanish.
