Specialized knowledge, integrated approach
A third-generation attorney and experienced engineer, Ross Apffel brings the best of both worlds to his intellectual property law practice. Prior to starting his legal career, Ross received his bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, while taking steps that would ultimately land him in the oil, gas and chemical division of Bechtel Corporation. First joining the company as a summer intern, Ross quickly advanced to become an electrical engineer and took on responsibility for the safety of electrical equipment in the hazardous areas of refineries. Today, Ross applies his experience and expertise to helping companies maximize their financial gain through solid protection and enforcement of IP rights.
Ross primarily focuses on patent preparation, prosecution and litigation support, as well as strategic counseling. His clients are largely made up of Fortune 500 complex software companies – from finance-related software to security-based products. Ross’ specialized knowledge of both the engineering and computer science fields gives him a unique advantage to understanding the challenges and opportunities that accompany his clients’ inventions.
Building a strong foundation
While earning his J.D. at South Texas College of Law, Ross engaged in a number of activities to complement his studies, including membership on the Mock Trial Team and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society. Off campus, Ross worked as an intern for Justice Brett Busby of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals, gaining practical exposure to the legal field by researching and drafting opinions, conducting substantive and technical site checks, and participating in pre- and post-submission conferences. As a result, Ross sharpened not only his analytical, writing and research skills but also laid the groundwork for a successful transition into practicing law.
Ross’ hobbies include hunting, fishing, running and competitive shooting. He also serves on the pastoral council at his church and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.
