Patrick Garrett, Of Counsel

Shrewsbury, NJ

O: 732-383-1386

A breadth of experience in IP law and electrical engineering

Patrick Garrett has more than two decades of experience counseling a diverse clientele in intellectual property matters, including startups and Fortune 50 companies. His core practice focuses on assisting the firm’s clients with patent preparation and prosecution; technology licensing and IP transactions in the technical areas of AI, machine learning, complex software, communications, electronics, semiconductor and optics technologies.

Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Patrick managed his own law firm in New Jersey and also served as a partner and counsel attorney at IP firms in Washington, D.C. and Maryland. His legal portfolio includes work for manifold technologies, including radio frequency, microwave and extraterrestrial communications, digital and analog signal processing, operating systems, virtual machines, artificial intelligence, and computer-based drug design and molecular modeling.

In addition to his broad IP knowledge, Patrick leverages a decade of experience working as an electrical engineer for a world-renowned defense contractor. He earned his J.D. from the University of Maryland and holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Widener University.

A holistic business partner and attentive learner eager to dive into complex technologies

Patrick’s enthusiasm for novel technologies and attention to detail have earned him a reputation as an attorney who devotes the necessary time to fully understand every aspect of an inventor’s work, from their complex technical architecture to the competitive advantage an approved patent would grant the business or individual.

When Patrick drafts a patent application, he goes to great lengths to ensure the writing is clear, concise, and sharp enough to survive any potential legal challenges competitors may bring in the future. He encourages a collaborative approach with his clients to both help him better comprehend their inventions and advise them on ways to strengthen the patent to serve their long-term business goals.

Giving back in his spare time

Patrick is a strong believer in giving back to the community he calls home. He performs pro bono work for the Catholic Charities Pro Bono Project, a first-of-its-kind initiative providing immigration legal services to low-income families in New York. He is also an active member of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) where he provides legal counsel to New York artists and arts and cultural organizations.

During the warmer months, Patrick enjoys sailing, hiking and rock climbing with his family. As soon as the temperature drops, he makes time to head to the mountains for snowboarding.
