An electrical engineer turned IP attorney

Theo Kountotsis is a talented intellectual property attorney with more than two decades of experience. He helps his clients protect their valuable innovations by preparing and prosecuting patents involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, communications technologies, electronics, semiconductors, internet innovations, and medical devices and procedures.

Before becoming a patent lawyer, Theo started off his career as an engineer for an American defense and aerospace company, where he worked on creating TRIDENT submarine fire control technologies.
That direct experience as an engineer allows Theo to quickly and efficiently assess a client’s invention and develop a patent strategy for protecting valuable innovations.

Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Theo drafted and prosecuted patent applications for large public clients. He also has conducted due diligence investigations such as freedom-to-operate, invalidity and non-infringement studies.

Understanding the client’s perspective

Theo is an approachable, detail-oriented attorney who enjoys working with new technologies. He is a good listener who has a client-focused approach, and he understands how to tailor his discussions with a client in order to draft the best possible patent application.

Theo holds his Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering from Western New England University and a Master’s Degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.

In his spare time, Theo enjoys spending time and traveling with his family. He has two young kids and enjoys traveling with them to experience different cultures.
