Supporting clients through industry experience and diligent research

Tyler Southern is a detail-focused and solution-oriented attorney in the firm’s Houston office who prepares, prosecutes, litigates and resolves disputes to protect his client’s intellectual property. He primarily supports clients in the chemical, oil and gas, electronics and semiconductor technology industries.

As a former Patterson + Sheridan summer associate and intern, Tyler prepared responses to both domestic and international office actions and assisted in patent prosecution for clients in the energy and semiconductor technology fields. He also gained experience working with the firm’s litigation team on several matters. Tyler gained experience drafting motions, supporting discovery, preparing memos, and conducting thorough and detailed legal research, giving him valuable insight into IP litigation. As an intern, Tyler also supported Patterson + Sheridan’s pro bono work for the Houston Department of Veterans Affairs.

Tyler’s understanding of energy is deep-rooted. While earning his undergraduate degree, Tyler focused his research on developing fuels through alternative methods. He led a senior design project on converting wood chips to green biodiesel through Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, ultimately creating an effective solution to a biofuel-related problem. Tyler also led a junior design project on fermenting lawn clippings to create ethanol. Throughout law school, he worked as a legal policy analyst for Colorado’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), where he upgraded its RAPID toolkit, a database of renewable energy and bulk transmission project development processes and applicable laws and regulations for each source of renewable energy. Tyler has expanded on this experience and assisted in defending the patents of an oil field equipment supplier during an Inter Partes Review (IPR), immersing himself once again in the technical aspects of the oil and gas industry.

A detail-oriented, organized attorney who values planning and communication

Tyler enjoys solving problems and thrives when given the opportunity to untangle a client’s technical challenge. He leverages his chemical engineering degree by asking insightful questions to thoroughly understand his client’s new technologies. After digging deep to gain a full understanding, Tyler plans his next steps by considering all possible approaches to deliver the best outcome for clients. He values strong communication and takes an empathetic approach to each case he handles to ensure his clients are heard and their problems are solved.

Tyler holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and obtained his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center.

When not in the office, Tyler loves to cheer on his favorite sports teams, specifically the Houston Rockets, Texans and Astros. He’s also an avid macaroon baker and enjoys coming up with different flavors to share with his friends and family.
