Brian Kentshire is a dedicated attorney who protects his clients’ valuable innovations by preparing and prosecuting patents and trademarks in the fields of chemicals, chemical engineering, clean technologies, consumer products, semiconductor technologies and industrial products. He also handles technology, licensing, artificial intelligence (AI) and IP transactions.
Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Brian served as senior intellectual property (IP) and AI counsel for a Fortune 500 chemical company. He held this role for more than 15 years, and was the global strategist and prosecutor for the company’s patent portfolios across the United States and in all foreign jurisdictions. Among his responsibilities, Brian oversaw IP strategy, agreements and ongoing matters. His work transformed the company’s struggling foreign patent portfolio to a more than 90% rate of success in gaining foreign patent rights. In addition, Brian personally managed individual patent portfolios with more than 1600 patents.
Brian previously held two positions at Patterson + Sheridan. As of counsel for three years and a senior associate for seven, he managed multiple patent portfolios and drafted, filed and prosecuted U.S. and foreign utility patent applications. He was also previously a senior associate for an Am Law 50 firm.
A love for AI and learning about new technologies
In addition to his AI and regular patent work, Brian has decades of experience counseling clients with respect to litigation support, legal opinions and portfolio management. Leveraging his in-house counsel experience, Brian understands the decision-making process that corporate legal departments go through when working on a matter. He also values thoughtful communication and serves as a strategic partner to his clients.
If a client has a patent issue, Brian can be trusted to step in and address it in a timely and precise fashion. He is a problem solver who has gained significant trust with his clients through his informed guidance on managing their IP portfolios to mitigate potential liability and leverage opportunities. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to a patent portfolio, and Brian will individualize his strategy for each unique situation.
Brian earned his J.D. from the South Texas College of Law and his B.S. in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University. When not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
