A dedicated IP attorney with dual engineering degrees
Eddie Kiessling has more than a decade of experience in all facets of IP protection, with a particular emphasis on patent preparation and prosecution. Given his dual degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering, Eddie has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications across a wide range of industries, including wearable devices (e.g., smartwatches), Lidar systems, LED-based lighting solutions, radiofrequency (RF) antennas, semiconductor manufacturing processes, telecommunications, household appliances, software, renewable energy and turbomachinery. In addition to his extensive experience in patent preparation and prosecution, Eddie has experience rendering patent-related opinions (e.g., freedom-to-operate) to determine the strength of patents and counsel his clients on the best possible course of action.
Prior to joining Patterson + Sheridan, Eddie was an associate at an intellectual property boutique firm, where he gained substantial experience in patent portfolio management through his management of a global portfolio for a division of a Fortune 500 company. Before that, he served as in-house IP counsel for a startup-company that developed RFID-based technology for monitoring healthcare workers’ compliance with hand-hygiene protocols. During his time as in-house IP counsel, Eddie worked closely with the engineering and sales team to develop a patent portfolio that aligned with the company’s strategic direction.
Collaborating with clients to develop robust IP solutions
While in law school, Eddie participated in an internship with NASA where he had the opportunity to prepare a patent application related to a valve assembly for the new Space Launch System (SLS). Eddie collaborated with NASA engineers to identify variations of the valve assembly that were ultimately captured in the patent application. This unique experience instilled in Eddie the important role collaboration plays in ensuring robust IP protection for his clients.
Eddie holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Huntsville and his J.D. from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University. During his time as in-house IP counsel, Eddie decided to further his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
Outside of the office, Eddie enjoys spending time with his family, friends and dogs. Also, as a former collegiate distance runner, Eddie enjoys distance running and regularly competes in local 5Ks, 10Ks and half-marathons.
